I found Jesus

I’m talking about Michael Vick. Vick, in his speech today, said among other things, “I found Jesus”. I’ve heard the whole thing a time or two now and up until that point I was really believing him. But when he mentioned Jesus it sounded like such a cliché. My co-worker and I were at lunch and when we heard that we just started laughing. Other than that part, he definitely sounded sincere and remorseful.

Now that Vick has admitted his guilt, I think I can finally put my thoughts to paper (virtual at least). I know what Vick did was awful and inhumane. I think he should deserve a second chance though. He should serve his time and be allowed a second chance to play once he’s legally able to. He will have definitely paid the price (jail and lost money) and if he’s been a good citizen up until that point he should be allowed to earn a living playing football again. Some may not agree, but nearly everyone deserves a second chance and he’s no different.

Who knew hashing could land you in court

Two siblings have a September court date for setting up a local hash in New Haven, Connecticut. While marking the trail for a local chapter of the Hash House Harriers, someone at IKEA called police which resulted in a bioterrorism scare. Laying down flour as a form of marking has been done at hashes for many years. It seems one person however has been watching too much Dateline and thought the flour was Anthrax (or some other poison) and called police. Now Daniel and Dorothee Salchow have a scheduled court date for a first degree breach of peace (a felony).

I think it’s pretty ridiculous that Daniel and Dorothee are facing felony charges. Someone over reacted and now they are paying the price. They also say in the article that the city plans to seek restitution. Restitution for laying down flour; what is that about 25 cents? My favorite quote has to be, “You see powder connected by arrows and chalk, you never know”. Yeah, because if a terrorist is laying down Anthrax I’m sure he/she would put arrows around it.

Glavine wins number 300

Tom Glavine just won his 300th game tonight against the Chicago Cubs. I’ve got mixed feelings about this. As a Braves fan I was pretty upset when he left via free agency that he went to the hated Mets. There is only one team that Braves fans hate more than the Mets and that’s the Yankees. I was sad to see him leave the Braves, but to leave for the Mets just downright hurt. Many Braves fans feel the same way I do.

On the other hand I’m very happy that Glavine won his 300th game. Tom Glavine meant a lot to the Braves during their run in the 1990’s and I was along for the entire ride. I think the only thing I’m mad about him winning his 300th game was that it wasn’t in a Braves uniform. The economics of baseball has changed dramatically in the last 15 years and I know why the Braves couldn’t keep him (thanks Time Warner).

But tonight, I salute you Tom Glavine. You joined an elite group of pitchers tonight, including your old buddy, and former Brave, Greg Maddux. Congratulations on a fantastic career thus far. Hopefully one day I’ll see you in the halls of Cooperstown.

Braves sold to Liberty Media

Today the sale of the Atlanta Braves to Liberty Media was approved by baseball owners. I’m really not sure if I’m suppose to be happy or not. On one hand, Time Warner is no longer the owner which is a good thing. On the other, all indications are that this was strictly a tax benefit deal for Liberty Media and I’ve heard no “real” excitement in owning a baseball team. I think the best possible outcome from this deal is that next year John Schuerholz has a bigger payroll to manage. I hope the payroll is increased but I’m not holding my breath.

I give up on the Braves this year

I’ve been writing this post in my head for the last month or so. Well, tonight I’m finally putting it online. The Braves just plain stink this year. There, I said it. I’ve been a Braves fan since I was a small child, going back to some pretty horrible teams in the 1980’s. I stood by them then, and I’ll still stand by them today. But I believe their winning streak has come to an end. I said when the season began that I thought this might be the year their winning streak ended. Judging by the way they have played recently, I don’t see how they can win their division. Their bullpen is the worst I’ve seen yet. They MUST go out and get some bullpen help. That will be the only thing they can do to even slow the bleeding, much less stop it. I’m done; and I’m mad.
