Long time Braves announcer Skip Caray, passed away on Sunday at age 68. As a long time Braves fan, I’m saddened today. I’ve been watching, seeing, and listening to Braves games since as early as I can remember. I remember going to games in the 1980’s and having the pick of nearly any seat in the house. Back then the Braves were so lousy you never had a problem finding your seat. When the 1990’s came around, that all changed.

My favorite Caray moment: 1992 NLCS; Braves vs. Pirates. I was watching a little TV outside with a friend on my trampoline. We were watching and listening to slow as molasses Sid Bream rounding third base heading for home. Barry Bonds picked up the Francisco Cabrera’s hit and heaved it home. “He iiiiiissssss …safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! … Braves win!” My friend and I went absolutely crazy.

RIP skip.

I had the strangest thing happen last night while watching some of the Braves vs. Brewers game. I was busy doing other things and had just missed seeing Chipper Jones bat. Since he’s tearing up the ball lately, I wanted to see his current BA (how much over .400 that is). So I cruised on over to the CNN SI website and saw the strangest thing. While looking at the box score, I noticed the game had gone final and the Braves won 8-1. Here’s the thing though, the TV was currently showing 6-1 Braves in the top of the 8th. Is the telecast SO far behind (1.5 innings), or is something else going on? I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but it would see pretty odd for a TV broadcast to be THAT far behind the live game. I was going to dismiss it as an error, but when I checked the final box score this morning the final score was in fact, 8-1 (like you see above). Strange coincidence, or something else?

The end of the baseball regular season has come, and again the Braves are sitting at home or on the golf course in October. While they made a nice run at the playoffs the last two weeks of the season, in the end they just couldn’t pull it off. Let’s take a look at the Braves as they stand right now and where they might be headed next year.

Starting Pitching
This was the albatross for the Braves all season long. After Tim Hudson and John Smoltz, the rest of the starting rotation was abysmal. Other than a few starts by Chuck James, the third through fifth starters in the rotation were often gone by the fifth inning and left the Braves with little chance to win. The backend of the starting rotation clearly is GM John Schuerholz’s biggest off season rebuilding project.

Catcher
While Brian McCann didn’t have as good a season as last year, he still played very well batting .270 with 18HR and 92RBI. Brian played much of the year hurt, so if he’s healthy next year I expect him to return to his 2006 form. With the trade of Jarrod Saltalamacchia, the catching depth isn’t what it was when the season started. However the Braves have a number of good catchers (Clint Sammons and Brayan Pena) in the minor league system so this definitely a deep position throughout the organization.

First Base
With the trade for Mark Teixeira, Atlanta brought in one of the best first basemen in the game today. A defensive asset (two time Gold Glove winner) and a sweet stroke make Teixeira a valuable player for any team. Mark absolutely crushed the ball upon arriving in Atlanta after the trade this year. Mark is only 27 years old as is entering the prime of his career. Behind starting pitching, signing Teixeira to a long term deal is a must for John Schuerholz this off season. The Braves cannot afford to let Teixeria leave via free agency after next season.

Second Base
Kelly Johnson had a solid year at second base. Johnson is just 25, and after completing his first full major league season the Braves are expecting improvement from him in 2008. Listening to John Schuerholz on the radio this morning, the middle infield is a deep position within the organization so if Johnson were to falter, there is likely help from the minor leagues.

Shortstop
Edgar Renteria had another good year in an Atlanta Braves uniform. One of the biggest surprises of the 2007 season for the Atlanta Braves was the play of Yunel Escobar, also at Shortstop. Shortstop is a well stocked position for the Braves coming into 2008. Renteria is signed through 2008, but Yunel played very well this year filling in just about anywhere in the infield. Schuerholz has a tough decision ahead of him this off season. Do you trade Renteria and go with the younger (and cheaper) Escobar? Or do you keep Renteria as the starting shortstop and risk benching Escobar’s bat and only using him to fill in as needed?

Third Base
Chipper Jones narrowly missed his first batting title this season, batting .337. Other than his MVP season of 1999, this might have been one of Chipper’s best years. Had he not missed a number of games to injury and the Braves made the playoffs, Jones would have definitely received MVP votes. He was clutch all season long. If Jones gets hurt, Yunel Escobar filled in quite well for Chipper at third this year.

Outfield
Other than the starting rotation, the biggest changes we’ll see next year are in the outfield. To no ones surprise, John Schuerholz announced today that the Braves would not attempt to resign Andruw Jones. Jones will command huge money on the free agent market and the Braves just don’t have the resources like they did when Ted Turner was the owner. Jones suffered near career lows in every offensive category since his first full season this year. With the money saved by not signing Jones, the Braves are looking to ink Teixeria to a long term contract. The Braves will miss Jones in center field, but if they sign Teixeria, at least they will have a Gold Glove at first base. Some people think it’s a huge mistake not trying to sign Jones but in the long run I think it’s best for the team.

Clearly with the departure of Andruw Jones, there is a huge hole in center field. Both Torii Hunter and Mike Cameron are free agents this year, so it’s likely the Braves will attempt to sign one of them. If they don’t sign Hunter or Cameron, Willie Harris could be the 2008 starting center fielder.

Jeff Francoeur had a fantastic season at the plate and in the field this year. His patience at the plate lead to a threefold increase in walks over his previous season. Jeff was also among the league leaders in outfield assists again this year. For much of the first half of the season, Jeff was leading the NL in 2 out RBIs too. Look for Jeff to have another great season next year and hopefully he will increase those power numbers too.

Matt Diaz had a career year in left field this season. Hitting .338, the Braves got plenty of outfield production from Diaz in addition to some clutch hitting. Barring something unexpected, expect to see Matt back in left field in 2008.

Bullpen
While the bullpen was much better than last year, improvements are needed. After releasing Bob Wickman, Rafael Soriano performed well in the closers role. Manny Acosta also pitched well after the late season call up in middle relief. Out of nowhere, Peter Moylan pitched spectacular all season long. Left handers, Ron Mahay and Royce Ring both threw sound enough to be back next year.

Other than pitching, the only holes that need to be sewn up are the lack of a long term contract with Mark Teixeria and the departure of Andruw Jones. On paper the offense looks good, but at times the Braves really struggled to score runs even with Teixeria in the lineup. While I’ll miss Jones in center field, I think the Braves did the right thing but not committing a huge sum of money to him. At times this season he just didn’t look like the old Jones and I think playing all those games in center and the beating he takes making those spectacular plays is catching up to him. I wish him luck next season, as long as he doesn’t sign with the Mets (like Glavine).

I’m talking about Michael Vick. Vick, in his speech today, said among other things, “I found Jesus”. I’ve heard the whole thing a time or two now and up until that point I was really believing him. But when he mentioned Jesus it sounded like such a cliché. My co-worker and I were at lunch and when we heard that we just started laughing. Other than that part, he definitely sounded sincere and remorseful.

Now that Vick has admitted his guilt, I think I can finally put my thoughts to paper (virtual at least). I know what Vick did was awful and inhumane. I think he should deserve a second chance though. He should serve his time and be allowed a second chance to play once he’s legally able to. He will have definitely paid the price (jail and lost money) and if he’s been a good citizen up until that point he should be allowed to earn a living playing football again. Some may not agree, but nearly everyone deserves a second chance and he’s no different.

Two siblings have a September court date for setting up a local hash in New Haven, Connecticut. While marking the trail for a local chapter of the Hash House Harriers, someone at IKEA called police which resulted in a bioterrorism scare. Laying down flour as a form of marking has been done at hashes for many years. It seems one person however has been watching too much Dateline and thought the flour was Anthrax (or some other poison) and called police. Now Daniel and Dorothee Salchow have a scheduled court date for a first degree breach of peace (a felony).

I think it’s pretty ridiculous that Daniel and Dorothee are facing felony charges. Someone over reacted and now they are paying the price. They also say in the article that the city plans to seek restitution. Restitution for laying down flour; what is that about 25 cents? My favorite quote has to be, “You see powder connected by arrows and chalk, you never know”. Yeah, because if a terrorist is laying down Anthrax I’m sure he/she would put arrows around it.

Tom Glavine just won his 300th game tonight against the Chicago Cubs. I’ve got mixed feelings about this. As a Braves fan I was pretty upset when he left via free agency that he went to the hated Mets. There is only one team that Braves fans hate more than the Mets and that’s the Yankees. I was sad to see him leave the Braves, but to leave for the Mets just downright hurt. Many Braves fans feel the same way I do.

On the other hand I’m very happy that Glavine won his 300th game. Tom Glavine meant a lot to the Braves during their run in the 1990’s and I was along for the entire ride. I think the only thing I’m mad about him winning his 300th game was that it wasn’t in a Braves uniform. The economics of baseball has changed dramatically in the last 15 years and I know why the Braves couldn’t keep him (thanks Time Warner).

But tonight, I salute you Tom Glavine. You joined an elite group of pitchers tonight, including your old buddy, and former Brave, Greg Maddux. Congratulations on a fantastic career thus far. Hopefully one day I’ll see you in the halls of Cooperstown.

Today the sale of the Atlanta Braves to Liberty Media was approved by baseball owners. I’m really not sure if I’m suppose to be happy or not. On one hand, Time Warner is no longer the owner which is a good thing. On the other, all indications are that this was strictly a tax benefit deal for Liberty Media and I’ve heard no “real” excitement in owning a baseball team. I think the best possible outcome from this deal is that next year John Schuerholz has a bigger payroll to manage. I hope the payroll is increased but I’m not holding my breath.

I’ve been writing this post in my head for the last month or so. Well, tonight I’m finally putting it online. The Braves just plain stink this year. There, I said it. I’ve been a Braves fan since I was a small child, going back to some pretty horrible teams in the 1980’s. I stood by them then, and I’ll still stand by them today. But I believe their winning streak has come to an end. I said when the season began that I thought this might be the year their winning streak ended. Judging by the way they have played recently, I don’t see how they can win their division. Their bullpen is the worst I’ve seen yet. They MUST go out and get some bullpen help. That will be the only thing they can do to even slow the bleeding, much less stop it. I’m done; and I’m mad.
