4 hour time difference when syncing iCal with the iPhone

I recently began to actually look into a problem with iCal on my iPhone. It seemed that when I would sync events from iCal they would always be off by a day or so. I didn’t know why for weeks. Tonight I sat down and finally decided to try to figure it out. I did a Google search and didn’t come up with anything. A few syncs later and I began to notice a pattern. The sync to the iPhone was adding four hours to the start time to the events (and of course the end time). I thought for sure it had to be a setting somewhere on the iPhone. Turns out, it was! I went into settings, and then general. In the general pane go to date & time. At the bottom I noticed two items labeled Time Zone Support and Time Zone. After playing around with those settings I realized my Time Zone option was set to no time zone. I changed it to Atlanta and did a re-sync. Sure enough, my events are all correct now!

The iPhone is amazing

I’m listening to some music on my iPhone as I’m typing this. The setup was simple, the interface is completely amazing, and the device is as slick as anything I’ve seen. I waited in line for about two hours and so far I’d say it is worth it. I haven’t tested out Edge yet, but the wifi speeds on my Airport Extreme are pretty good. I’ve sent a few emails and posted on a forum and both were pretty easy to get the hang of. Perhaps the thing I’ve been most impressed with is the “smartness” of the keyboard. It does a fantastic job of guessing what you meant to type. By trusting the keyboard to correct your mistakes you can actually type fairly fast on it.

Is the device worth $600 (I got the 8GB)? Yes and No. Sure, there are devices that will do a lot of the same things as the iPhone at much cheaper prices. None will have even close to the style, sleekness, and overall satisfaction of using the iPhone though. So, if you have $500 or $600 to blow on the latest gadget, yes it’s DEFINITELY worth it. If you are short on cash, wait a year and you’ll be able to get something better than what I have at a cheaper price.

So far, iPhone = iHype in my book. I’ll post more later.

My Vista Experience

If I had to sum up my Windows Vista experience thus far, I’d do so with a video. Watch this video to get a good idea of Vista. I used it for about a day at work and I hated it. That video is so true it’s hysterical.

Wait on Safari for Windows

I installed Safari for Windows yesterday on my work PC. Yeah, I work on a PC at work and then come home to my Mac. I told my boss that if we get Macs then I’ll be happy to take a Macbook Pro and support Macs. We’ll see if that ever happens! Anyways, back to Safari. I uninstalled Safari for Windows about two hours after installing it. Why? It’s just not ready for the enterprise. Point in case, you could not enter a proxy server and I bet many in large corporations are the same way. I can’t get anywhere at work without a proxy server. Perhaps I’ll wait for a stable Safari release but I’m pretty happy with Firefox on Windows.

Testing MarsEdit

I thought I might give this site a little TLC in the coming month or so. I got a Macbook recently and I’m loving it. Goodbye Windows, hello OS X. I’m testing a new program too in hopes that it might let me write blog posts a little easier. The program is called MarsEdit as the title of this post suggests. That’s all for now! I’ll see you around. You’ll also notice some pro Mac posts coming. Sorry, I might be a fanboy now.
