4 hour time difference when syncing iCal with the iPhone

I recently began to actually look into a problem with iCal on my iPhone. It seemed that when I would sync events from iCal they would always be off by a day or so. I didn’t know why for weeks. Tonight I sat down and finally decided to try to figure it out. I did a Google search and didn’t come up with anything. A few syncs later and I began to notice a pattern. The sync to the iPhone was adding four hours to the start time to the events (and of course the end time). I thought for sure it had to be a setting somewhere on the iPhone. Turns out, it was! I went into settings, and then general. In the general pane go to date & time. At the bottom I noticed two items labeled Time Zone Support and Time Zone. After playing around with those settings I realized my Time Zone option was set to no time zone. I changed it to Atlanta and did a re-sync. Sure enough, my events are all correct now!

  1. THANK YOU for posting this! I just started using the iCal and after I entered about 6 months of dates & appointments I realized they were all off by an hr. Thanks for helping out…I was about to throw my iPhone out the window! :-)

  2. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

  3. Thank you so much for your simple and easy to follow tip. I’m slow to the game and just getting up and running on my first iPhone. I’ve searched many discussion forums and had trouble finding a simple solution. I’m so glad I found your post. Thanks again!

  4. Thanks Kevin. In one word you have to set the time zone on the iphone and on the iCal. My latest ipod is a little bit . I had to go to settings->general->date & time-> time zone which I set it to Boston MA.
Then I went to: settings -> general -> mail, contacts, calandar -> time zone support. Then I set time zone support to ON and time zone to Boston MA, where I live.
Don’t forget as well on iCal to dgo to: preferences -> advanced then check turn on time zone support.
Then go to iTunes and sync.
You should see iphone and iCal synched. If by mistake you synched to say 4 hours late for each event on iCal, do the following:
Go to an event on iCal, double click on it the choose edit, you will see the time zone different from yours choose the one you like, in my case it’s east cost.
May be you have to do it for each event. Sync again and you are ready to go
